Marine scientists from NIOT (National Institute of Ocean Technology) deployed autonomous underwater vehicles in the Bay of Bengal. These AUVs detected patterns in deep sea temperature and pressure anomalies that often preceded seismic tremors. The discovery offers a potential lead in creating an early warning system for coastal India. While still in early stages, this could one day offer 3 5 day alerts for tsunamis or quakes.
